The Gamma Beta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was organized on March 20, 1937, in Sherman, Texas. Eula Lee Carter, honorary DKG Founder and DKG State President at that time, was in charge of the inauguration, in which there were fifteen charter members, mostly from Collin County. During those early years, members attended meetings held in a local park, member's homes and local churches.
Over the years, Gamma Beta has been innovative in developing new chapters within the DKG organization. During Minnie Fae Griffin's term (1974-1976) Gamma Beta divided as Plano was rapidly growing, and the Iota Omega Chapter was begun. During Diane Talley's term (1990-1992) Gamma Beta decided to sponsor a new chapter in Allen, Texas, Mu Nu Chapter. The new officers were initiated on October 6, 1991, in the Heard-Craig Auditorium. Most recently, during Laura Cooper's term (2014-2016), Gamma Beta was instrumental in the sponsorship of the Nu Gamma Chapter, which was chartered on May 1, 2016 in Wylie, Texas.
Many important speakers have addressed Gamma Beta members over the years. During Rebecca Lovell's term (1942-43), Judge Sarah T. Hughes spoke to our chapter on the topic of "Women's Place After the War." Current State Representative Jodie Laubenberg has also spoken about important legislative matters on several occasions.
Gamma Beta members have initiated and supported a number of projects over the years. During Loydell Seward's second term (1995-1996), Gamma Beta adopted The Samaritan Inn, Collin County's only homeless shelter, as an on-going project, which continues to this day. During Carol Lowe's term (2002-2004), the first DKG education grant was written by Loydell Seward and approved for Guatemala 5th grade field trips. Through these efforts, "Joining Hands Across the Americas" was developed and became a joint effort with other Collin County chapters and Guatemala chapters to provide scholarships for teacher training for the women in Guatemala. This education partnership continued for many years for the children/women of Santa Avelina, Guatemala.
Through the leadership of the Gamma Beta Chapter and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, many of our members have advanced even further to become DKG state committee members, DKG state and area workshop presenters, as well as chapter and area officers. We continue to seek potential new members in our local communities to mentor and encourage to further develop their leadership potential.
This past Spring, Gamma Beta celebrated its 80th birthday! Our proud and energetic membership includes women educators and retired women educators, mostly from Collin County, who desire to continue to support fellow educators in our community as we work together towards reaching common goals and purposes.
